Dating... and the Economy

When you’re feeling the pinch of the economy, obviously you have to cut back on spending. However— when it comes to dating—you don’t have to cut back on fun. Ratchet up the creativity…and get clever. To start with, here are the basic (and cost-saving) ways to meet someone:1. Talk to people
Being introduced to someone by your friends is safer than meeting any stranger anywhere. If you compare looking for a date to finding a job… ask yourself…how do people find good places to work? Usually, the best ones come from networking. The same holds true for dates. Network your way to more and better dates.
2. Internet dating sites
Lots of people meet each other on the Internet… but I do not recommend the free dating sites. There is a greater risk of fraud and deception. Most dating sites will cost around $30.00 for three months. For that small investment, it’s worth a try.
3. Places or activities you love
Good places to meet someone are reunions, weddings, spiritual gatherings, professional meetings, trade shows, conferences, classes, or conventions. In these places, you’ll find others with similar interests, beliefs or backgrounds. And remember: smiling and being friendly is everything!
Where to go for no-cost dates…after you do meet someone:
* Take a “walking” date through a park, on a trail, or down some interesting streets.
* Take a walk with a focus, such as, to see the spring wild flowers, migrating whales (if you live near the ocean), wild geese, ducks on a pond, fall leaves, or baby lambs. Whatever is going on in your neck of the woods, there’s something to take a walk for.
* Attend a play, recital, choir, or concert at a school or church.
* Attend a lecture on an interesting subject at your local high school or college.
* Visit real estate open houses.
* Go to your local elementary or high school football, basketball, or baseball games. Track meets, swim meets, wrestling matches, and tennis matches are fun too!
* If you already have the equipment, or can borrow it, volleyball, roller- skating, badminton, basketball, tennis, bicycling, or horse shoes are all free if you have a park or school nearby with courts, sidewalks, or game areas.
* Watch special shows on TV together.
* Play Board Games, cards, or even Pick-Up-Sticks.
* Plant a flowerbed or vegetable garden. Seed packets are inexpensive and you will both enjoy watching things grow.
* Borrow a Karaoke machine and have friends over for a songfest. Have everyone bring a favorite snack to share.
Dates that can turn out to cost you a lot of money are amusement parks, big-name music concerts, overnight trips or other travel destinations. Don’t do these if you don’t have the money. If you’re trying to impress someone…you’re out with the wrong person.
Keep it simple… keep it fun… and keep it no or low cost for you. That’s the way you get to keep dating— even in this economy.
